State level Chess Tournament for women began on 21 June

A three day long State level Chess Tournament for women began on 21 June. The tournament was organised by the Alekhin Chess club which is functioning at the Russian Cultural Centre. Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Mrs.Chandrika inaugurated the tournament. Inaugurating the Chess tournament the Mayor said that Russia and India are still keeping the monopoly in Chess. “Russia presented many Grand Masters to the world. Viswanathan Anand a gain became the World Champion. It is good to know that Anand began to learn Chess at the Russian Cultural Centre in Chennai. But more steps need to be taken to promote chess among women”, said the Mayor. More than 50 women from all over Kerala participated in the Tournament. Chess tournament will end on 23 June. Ms.Nimmy A.George from Kochi who has the international rating (2199) won the tournament with 4.5 points. Ms.Meghna C.C from Calicut who has the national level rating won the second prize. Ms.Niji. A from Calicut won the third prize. Director General of Police Mr.Jacob Punnoose gave away the awards

Day of Russian Language and Pushkin Day celebrated in Trivandrum

Day of Russian language and the birth anniversary of Russia’s great poet Alexander Pushkin was observed on 6th June at the Russian Cultural Centre, Trivandrum. Famous poet who translated many poems of Pushkin Prof.


Puthusseri Ramachandran inaugurated the seminar to mark this important event. In his inaugural speech, Prof.Ramachandran said that Pushkin was a treated as the father of Russian poetry because he opened door of Russian literature to the other part of the world. “Alexander Pushkin believed in the strength of poems but he misbelieved in the right spirit of love. He lost his life because of it. Otherwise world literature would get a treasure of good poems from him. His poetic novel Evgeniy Onegin was an unique initiative in literature. Many people do not know that Pushkin's work as a journalist marked the birth of the Russian magazine culture, including him devising and contributing heavily to one of the most influential literary magazines of the 19th century, Alexander Pushkin became an inseparable part of the literary world of the Russian people, said Prof.Puthusseri Ramachandran.

 

The Guest of Honour of the Function and famous poet Prof.D.Vinayachandran said that the decision of the Russian Government to observe the Birth anniversary of Alexander Pushkin as the Day of Russian Language was ideal because thanks to that great poet Russians had started feeling pride about the Russian language and literature. Dr.Govindan Nair, Head of the Russian Language Institute at the Russian Cultural Centre presided over the function. Prof. Thumbaman Thomas, Director of the State Institute of Encyclopedia and writer Vithura Baby felicitated the gathering. Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation and Director of the Russian Cultural Centre in Trivandrum Ratheesh C. Nair welcomed the gusts and participants.

World Environment Day celebrated in Trivandrum
